Whether you’re spending your vacations in Turkey or in Jordan, there are always common things that you should do and avoid.
Dress appropriately. Sure you come from a country where people have the freedom to wear whatever they want, but you don’t want to be clashing with most people of where you’re staying for your holidays. Remember that you are a guest and you should respect the ways of your hosts. This doesn’t mean that women should be completely covered, this isn’t even mandatory in most Muslim countries. Just don’t wear anything too revealing or provoking: a t-shirt and a knee length skirt is just fine.
Don’t drink in public. Drinking any fermented drinks is a sin for the Islamic faith. Although alcohol is served in hotels and in tourist areas, avoid drinking in public, as it can be considered an insult to their faith.
Beware of public displays of affection. In many Islamic countries this is fine, but it is forbidden in some. Make sure you know the law before going into the country.
Finally, be careful during Ramadan. Ramadan is a time of fasting and of meditative behavior in the Muslim faith. It is also forbidden to eat, drink and smoke in public places from sun rise to sun down. Check with the hotel staff as there are often places where tourists can eat during this period, but it’s best to just time your holidays around it.
